History in the Cotswolds

The history of the Cotswolds is an endlessly fascinating topic to delve into. No matter what you are interested in you’ll find something that will grab your attention when you arrive in the Cotswolds for a holiday or a long weekend.

For starters the Cotswolds area has its fair share of castles to show you. There is the famous Sudeley Castle as well as Warwick Castle, and you can also see the history of the area when you visit Blenheim Palace. This location is packed with marvels to find out more about.

But there is a lot more to finding out about the past here than what you will find when you visit the area’s castles and other similar venues. There are clues to the history of the area in some of the place names as well. Take Chipping Campden and Chipping Norton for example. In ancient times the word ‘cheapen’ meant market, and ‘chipping’ has been derived from this to show us how things used to be in some areas of the Cotswolds.

The history of the Cotswolds goes back a lot further than this as well. If you visit areas such as Hazleton you will be able to see signs of the Neolithic age. You can come forward a little further through history to see the Rollright Stones in the Cotswolds as well, proving that this area is packed with history from top to bottom.
